Unit Overview:
In this unit, we learned about characterization in short stories. . We also wrote an essay comparing and contrasting two different characters from different texts. We had to analyze those characters and how some of the characters are remarkable and how they different. The understanding of characterization has enabled us to understand Shakespeare’s use of character foils.
What makes a character memorable
A character would be memorable when they do something that appealing, unique personality and interesting lesson. The authors could make their characters really look like they are alive by showing what the characters are like speeches, thoughts, actions, physical description and dialogue or what character say between the characters. All of these help to create memorable characters. For example, the details of the character looks, behavior, and other personalities are part of characterization. In the story "Hamadi" and "Why the Caged Bird Sings", both main characters give best advice and Hamadi is a very remarkable in “Hamadi” because he helped Tracy when she started crying because Eddie was ignoring her. Hamadi is a remarkable character because Hamadi helps Tracy pass through her problems by being a mentor, and someone to look up to. He influences her with a quote and cheers her up. Mrs. Flowers in the story in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is also a very remarkable character because she was able to inspire, teach Marguerite about literature and always helps Marguerite overcome obstacles, this makes her remarkable because Ms. Flower gives fellow blacks encouragement to choose their own destiny no matter of other people’s judgement at the end of the story.
Technical—
In order to write an effective literary criticism essays, I need to have an introduction that provides some background of the story because my readers may have never read the story I am analyzing before. My introduction should have a strong thesis that answers the essay prompt. The essay needs the right grammar that fits the context of your essay. The tone of the essay needs to be in a formal tone or else it will not be presented to the reader properly. Moreover, evidence is very necessary to writing a literary essay because the writer needs to be able to prove thir point by finds some evidence and give some counter -argument to make the essay even stronger. Moreover, The conclusion of the essay needs to restate all of the statements that are in the essay and emphasize them again. This will help the reader to think about the the statements that the writer made in the essay and it may change their thought when they first starting reading the essay.
